Alone in her home, Margaret White (Julianne Moore), a deeply religious woman in the throes of a inful childbirth, prays for guidance in what she believes is her hour of death. When she gives birth to a baby girl, she grabs a pair of scissors, intending to kill the infant, but then decides against it.
Years later, the daughter, Carrie, is a shy, underconfident girl nearing her graduation from Ewen High School in Maine. One day, while showering after gym class, Carrie experiences her first menstrual period. Ignorant of menstruation, she thinks she's bleeding to death. The other girls laugh at Carrie and tease her, throwing tampons and sanitary napkins at her. One of the girls, Chris Hargensen (Portia Doubletiaday), who has bullied Carrie for years, records the event on her smartphone and uploads it to YouTube. The gym teacher, Miss Desjardin (Judy Greer), comforts Carrie, but when Principal Morton (Barry Henley) later tells Carrie that he must inform her mother of the event, Carrie becomes frightened, and manifests hertelekinetic abilities by inadvertently causing an office water cooler to explode. She is subsequently reprimanded by Margaret, who believes that Carrie's menstruation is a sin, and that she must abstain from showering with the others, but when Carrie rejects this, Margaret hits Carrie with a bible and locks her in a closet. As Carrie screams to be let out, a crack appears on the door, and the crucifix in the closet begins to bleed.
The next day, Miss Desjardin informs the girls who teased Carrie that they will endure boot-camp style detention for their behavior. Chris refuses and urges her friends to join her, but they refuse. Chris is suspended and banned from the prom. Her lawyer father threatens to sue unless the suspension is rescinded, but Desjardin reveals that someone uploaded a video of the shower incident to YouTube--most likely Chris. Chris' father begs her to hand over her phone, but Chris storms out and vows revenge.
Carrie researches telekinesis and learns how to harness her new-found abilities. Sue Snell (Gabriella Wilde), one of the popular girls that teased Carrie in the shower room, regrets her behavior and attempts to make amends by asking her boyfriend, Tommy Ross (Ansel Elgort) to take Carrie to the prom. Carrie accepts Tommy's invitation, but when she informs her mother of this, Margaret refuses to permit Carrie to attend. In pleading her mother for permission, Carrie manifests her telekinesis. Margaret believes this power comes from the Devil and is proof that Carrie has been corrupted by sin.
Chris, her boyfriend Billy Nolan (Alex Russell), and his friends slip onto a nearby farm, where they kill a pig and drain its blood into a bucket. Chris and Billy then break into the gym and hang the bucket over the stage. On the night of the prom, Margaret tries to prevent Carrie from going to the prom, but Carrie telekinetically locks her mother in the closet. At the prom Carrie is nervous and shy, but Tommy is very kind to her, and puts her at ease. Carrie and Tommy are named prom queen and king, a result of fake ballots being stuffed into the ballot box as part of Chris and Billy's plan. Meanwhile, Sue, who is at home, receives a text from Chris taunting her about her plan of revenge on Carrie. Horrified, Sue drives to the prom, arriving just as Carrie and Tommy are about to be crowned. Sue sees the bucket of pig blood, but before she can warn anyone Miss Desjardin hustles her out, suspecting that Sue is planning to humiliate Carrie.
Chris dumps the bucket of pig's blood onto Carrie and Tommy. The bucket falls onto Tommy's head, killing him. Chris's shower video then appears on large screens above the stage, inciting laughter from some in the audience. An enraged Carrie uses her telekinesis to knock everyone to the ground, and then locks all of the doors to prevent anyone from escaping and Sue from entering the gym. She then begins using her telekinesis to kill most of the students and staff, (with the exception of Miss Desjardin) which results in a fire. As the school burns to the ground, Carrie leaves, leaving a trail of fire and mass destruction in her wake. When Chris and Billy attempt to flee in Billy's car, Carrie causes the road in front of them to cave in, forcing them to turn around. Seeing Carrie before them, Chris urges Billy to run Carrie over, but Carrie uses her powers to kill Chris and Billy before hurling the car into a gas pump, setting it ablaze.
When Carrie gets home, she sees Margaret and they embrace. Margaret tells Carrie about the night of Carrie's conception, relating that, after having shared a bed platonically for some time with her husband, they felt temptation one night, and, after praying for strength, Carrie's father "took" Margaret, who found that she enjoyed the experience. Margaret then stabs Carrie in the back with a knife. Carrie flees, and after Margaret slashes her several more times, Carrie uses her telekinetic powers to levitate a large number of knives, impaling Margaret repeatedly, and pinning her against a wall in the pose of a crucified person. Carrie then releases her mother and cradles her as she dies in her arms. Realizing what she has done, Carrie becomes hysterical and makes stones start to rain from the sky to crush the house, until Sue shows up. A furious Carrie grabs Sue with her powers, but is surprised to sense something within Sue, and tells her that her baby is a girl. Carrie then pushes a stunned Sue out of the house to safety. The house collapses and apparently kills Carrie.
During a voice-over of her testimony in court regarding the incident at the prom, in which most of her friends, including Tommy, were killed, Sue visits Carrie's grave and places a single white rose by the headstone, which has been vandalized with the words "Carrie White Burns In Hell". A series of cracks then splinter the gravestone's surface.
